Join us on a select Friday each month for a casual gathering with the humanities community. “What the….? Fridays” coffee chats are conceived as opportunities to gather and assess current conditions in an informal yet informed manner.
In the context of what's going on in the world, let’s take some time to share our understandings of big issues and brainstorm ideas for how to uphold the best values of our work.
Our first gathering of the year will address a flashpoint of current debates about university labor and governance in higher education: academic freedom. How do we understand this principle of university teaching and research? What does academic freedom look like in our classrooms and scholarship? At a time when academic freedom is being critically scrutinized, how do we imagine its future? Let’s take a break and think about this issue together! Coffee and pastries are on the house.
Coffee, tea and pastries will be served. This event is free, open to the public and welcoming to everyone.
