Hagerty Hall, 1st floor Crane Cafe
Join Yiddish song ensemble Levyosn for a lunch-time concert featuring songs from their second album, Levyosn's Dream. This album showcases the band's personal favorite Yiddish nature songs, songs about sewing and original klezmer dance tunes. Cultural context and translations will be provided, along with a Q&A session at the concert’s conclusion, facilitated by Assistant Professor and Yiddish Program Director Saul Zaritt.
Founded in 2021, Levyosn is an ensemble specializing in Yiddish song and klezmer. The band takes its name from the Ashkenazi Hebrew word for the leviathan, a mythical sea creature travelling the world’s oceans collecting songs, krill and dreams. They released their debut album, Levyosn’s Lullaby, through Borscht Beat in 2023. Their repertoire includes traditional music and original songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino and English and draws from adjacent Eastern European folk traditions. Intricate arrangements and rich vocal harmonies make their sound unique. The group has a deep knowledge and connection to Yiddish culture and Jewish tradition and loves to get audiences singing and dancing along with the music.
Co-sponsored by the Melton Center for Jewish Studies and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures.
This event is free, open to the public and welcoming to all.
